These surveys undertaken by the Survey Department includes specially contour surveys for the purpose of designing various kinds of engineering projects.
A contour survey illustrates the elevation differences across the land mostly at regular intervals, from the lowest point to the highest point. Contour lines join points at the same elevation. The distinguishing feature in this survey is that relative heights of points are given and the accuracy depends on the requirement of the project / Client.
Some majority surveys among them are for irrigation projects, flood protection and designing & construction of roads, railways & water supply and drainage. Mainly, requests for these surveys are from Irrigation Department, Mahaweli Authority, other Government Departments and Statutory Bodies. The requirement of the survey under these schemes varies project wise and standard departmental specifications are available for each type of survey.
